Rinkadink is one of the most original full on producers to show up after the year 2000. Having released tracks on many labels and two very diverse albums on Alchemy Records, he is one of the most intriguing psytrance producers and one of my favorite acts. As you can read in this interview, he is as funny and spontaneous as his music, and here he talks about his albums, new objectives and his opinions on interesting issues.
Follow the sample on Pirate Signal: Enjoy!
fullonline: Who is "Rinkadink", where are you from and what is your musical background? Why you choose this name to your project?
Rinkadink: My name's Vana, I'm from Capetown - South Africa, and I've been living in London since 2000ad, I used to sing in the choir and play piano when I was younger.
I choose the name Rinkadink because I like the rhythm of the word, the way it rolls off your tongue, and I think it sounds good when pronounced by people in many languages...
fullonline: Are you married and/or have kids?
Rinkadink: I'm married, and I have a sprog on the way......
fullonline: Can you keep a comfortable lifestyle working only as a psychedelic artist or a second job is needed?
Rinkadink: This is my only job, I work fucking hard, all day long, I play most weekends, I produce constantly to stay on top of myself. London is super expensive, so I need to play all the time or else I won't be able to pay for everything.
fullonline: What is on your CD Player right now?
Rinkadink: My favorite dance track at the moment is ''This is my life'' by FREQ. I LOVE this track so much!!!!! I was at a private party this weekend and they must have played is 8 times, I was on the dancefloor every time jumping and singing along!!!!! wicked track Freq dudes!!!! Awesome!
fullonline: Your debut album "Rabbit from Darkside" is a masterpiece in my opinion and in the opinion of my closer friends. Not "killargh" music for the dance floor, but still an effective, trippy and well produced album.
Quick questions about the album:
fullonline: What are your favorite tracks?
Rinkadink: Anyone seen Bender, Tune from childhood, Cabbage, Spooge
fullonline: Do you still play some tracks from this debut album at your Live Acts?
Rinkadink: Hell yeah!
fullonline: Any chance of releasing a remix of one of these classics?
Rinkadink: For sure! It's in the pipeline.....
fullonline: Why the hell the bass line on "Cabbage al la Tetradink" is so loud?
Rinkadink: I don't think it's that loud!
fullonline: On the booklet of my original, under the Stampede track is written: "Written by Vana in some hotel room, Brazil." Is it true you did the album without monitors, only with headphones? Comment that.
Rinkadink: Yes its true, most of the album was written at the kitchen table with headphones, but of course I spent time in a proper studio correcting the mixes once all the trax were completed... its not sweat, I do it the whole time, make music everywhere.
fullonline: Your second album, "Pirate Signal" is another very different release, I enjoy it a lot.
Quick questions about the album:
fullonline: What is your favorite track?
Rinkadink: I like a couple of trax on it, I have no single favorite.
fullonline: What was the source of your muse and inspiration to make this album?
Rinkadink: I was stressed and hyper while I wrote it, I was in a dark mood, the album is quintessential London, urban psy to blast in your Audi T4 when you cruise through Piccadilly circus.
The trax deal with emotions and states of mind that arise from living in a big city: grit, addiction and determination.
fullonline: How do you define the music in this album?
Rinkadink: Urban Psy
fullonline: How do you see the differences between this album and your debut?
Rinkadink: The first one is a beautiful positive affirmation of my personality, the second one dealt with all the things I explained in the previous question.
fullonline: The cover of your albums show sort of a "Rabbit". How do you choose that? Is there any connection with the movie Donnie Darko?
Rinkadink: There is no connection with Donnie Darko, I though that movie had an amazing concept, but apart from the disturbing but iconic visuals, it was poorly executed.
The origins and meaning of the rabbit are deeply personal and private.
fullonline: You have been described as an "advocate of software-only music production". Tell us about that.
Rinkadink: I use no hardware (apart from the computer) I feel it is unnecessary at this point in time, however I've recently plugged in my Novation Nova after it spent more than 2 years sleeping in a box, and I must say that I'm loving its sound...
fullonline: What other music style do you listen to?
Rinkadink: I listen to music all the time, I love everything... check out:
Booka Shade - Madarin girl
u.n.k.l.e. - psyence fiction the album
Depeche Mode - Playing the angel
Atari Teenage Riot - Redefine the enemy
Radiohead - Everything in its right place
fullonline: What Psytrance Artists would you like to work with?
Rinkadink: I'd like to work with Protoculture again, plus X-Dream, all the SA crew broken, Damage, Artifact, etc, etc... Eskimo, Cosmosis, Sub6, Pixel, Logic Bomb, etc.
fullonline: Is there any equipment you think can help you produce better music?
Rinkadink: I think a silent pc will help you make better music, have a look online at all the AMAZING products that you can use to make your pc silent, liquid cooling, vapochill, etc. I'm disgusted with apple for selling such expensive computers that are meant to be so "state of the art", but still make tons of noize... Fuck you Apple! You pigs should be ashamed of yourselves and damn you for been so sneaky and writing all that code into your new iTunes that transmits back all the info of what trax people listen to, then try sell them similar music, I don't care what your evil marketing demons thought about it been a genius idea, I feel its a gross violation of my privacy, and I want you to know that I'll NEVER install iTunes on my computer EVER again, nor will I buy one of your tacky iPods to fund you insane plot to buy the world.
fullonline: Do you prefer to play at parties at any specific time?
Rinkadink: I like to play in the daytime.
fullonline: How do you choose the samples of your tracks? What is your favorite one?
Rinkadink: I just listen to stuff, if I get a spark of imagination, and I think that something might work in a track I just bang it in there.
fullonline: How it is to work for Alchemy Records? What they do for you?
Rinkadink: We are a family, we've been partying together for years... We all work together to make sure we'll all ok, they manage every aspect of my career, they promote the music, make the bookings and release the music... I wouldn't have it any other way.
fullonline: What are your future releases? Any work on a new album?
Rinkadink: I'm working on new music everyday; my current objective is to make a whole new crop of fresh music for the upcoming festivals...
fullonline: What do you think about people sharing music through mp3 instead of buying it?
Rinkadink: I love the concept of file sharing. I don't care that because of piracy I sell a fraction of what I could have sold if I was releasing music 10 years ago. Fuck the big business media companies, bring on the new concepts and new styles of media distribution...
fullonline: You just launched your website www.rinkadink.net. Talk about this new project, what are you planning? Will the "RINKALOG" be updated frequently? I really enjoyed the clip I downloaded from the Alchemy Records site when I bought your second album, any chance something similar will be available on your site?
Rinkadink: My website is very personal, its just for me to speak about how I'm feeling and what I'm doing in the world, I'm sick of all these flash sites everywhere that look beautiful, but are static... In the future I'd like to sell music on it, add a video section with me cooking regional recipes from around the world (I'm a serious chef)
fullonline: What is your favorite psychoactive molecule?
Rinkadink: My favorite chemicals are 2-CB, MDMA, and LSD.
fullonline: We all know that all kind of weird stuff happen at psychedelic gatherings. Can you tell us something different/funny that you saw or happened to you in a party?
Rinkadink: Just keep reading the Rinkalog, I'm sure there'll be some funny shit on there real soon.
fullonline: I never asked this question before, but since you're quite unpredictable I'd like to known some of your all time favorite psytunes. Can you make a Top 10 with some of your favorite gems?
Rinkadink:
Beast - Spawn
Cydonia - April Fools
Cydonia - Lightning Rods
Tortured Brain - The Raver
Xerox and Freeman - Carina
Tortured Brain - electoanphenapane (dammit, I can't never remember how to spell this! {Electroencephalotramme})
Delta - scitsoeffective
Cop - El Nino
Vana
fullonline: Thank you!
Respect!
