Triptych is known for his unique and original style and the Electrology demonstrates his brilliant skills in terms of production quality. His sound is both wide and dynamic simultaneously and is always clear and powerful. Since the first time I heard "Something Better" I was hooked. Triptych music is a high tech groove impossible to resist, that's why it's been released in more than 10 different labels. Here we have the opportunity to know a bit more about him and the steps he took as an successful artist.
fullonline - Who is "Triptych", where you are from and what is your musical background?
Triptych - Triptych is Charles Michaud, 28 years old, Sagittarius asc Cancer ;) and living near Paris (France) but in the countryside.
Im into music since long time, I started to listen some vinyl
(disco, classical, and everything I could find in my parents house) when
I was a little boy. Then I started piano and musical theory at 8 and
then guitar in a rock band at 15. I started electronic music at 22, and I
work as sound engineer.
fullonline - Are you married and/or have kids?
Triptych - Not married, no kids.
fullonline - Can you keep a comfortable lifestyle working only as a psychedelic artist or a second job is needed?
Triptych - Actually with the second album Electrology its ok, I can live with it, with the bookings, but I'm also working as a sound engineer for mastering and for cinematography (sound design, sound mixing, and sound editing) and work also for other musical project
fullonline - What is on your CD Player right now?
Triptych - I listen again to all the U2 albums, right now is the last album, How to dismantle an atomic bomb , brilliant ! !
fullonline - Which one of your own music do you like the most? Does it have a special meaning to you?
Triptych - I often prefer my last tracks. I dont listen to my old stuff, I always want something new, we can say I prefer the tracks I still didnt made ;)
fullonline - What other music style do you listen to?
Triptych - Pop-Rock (Beatles, lots of 70s music, U2, REM), Classical (Wagner, Beethoven, D.Scarlatti), Electro (Tiefschwarz, Infusion, Goldfrapp) and Prince and Frank Zappa ! ! and many many other stuff
fullonline - What Psytrance Artists would you like to work with?
Triptych - I actually work on a track with Pop Stream, I really like his style, its a very talented musician, with a lot of clever ideas in his music which is very fresh.
fullonline - Is there any equipment you think can help you produce better music?
Triptych - The best gear we can all have is our ears, we just need to train them, then you need to have some sound engineering skill as well, because in electronic music you are also your own producer
fullonline - Do you prefer to play at parties at any specific time?
Triptych - I prefer playing outdoor when the sun is shining, morning or happy hours time ;) I often play between 8 and 12 AM in festivals.
fullonline - How do you choose the samples of your tracks? What is your favorite one?
Triptych - At the beginning I used to find serious samples taken from movies, like everybody does or did once in their psy-trance career lol, but now I find it more funny to just looking for good sounding samples without a too much serious meaning, like the Batman ones I took for stop the press or the ones in 2 ears, 1 mouth released on a Groove Zone compilation. I really like to play with samples and to use them as sound to put musically in a track.
fullonline - Your second album "Electrology" is different and receiving good reviews everywhere. Talk about the process of creation of this masterpiece.
Triptych - I wanted to make a different style that we use to hear these days. For my first album I tried to sound in the full-on morning vibes and I had to respect some codes . With Electrology I wanted to explore new horizons by mixing psy-trance with other music I use to hear a lot like Funk, electro and many others. I felt more free to make this album. Track most difficult to do was Wicked Jimmy and my favorite is Electrology
fullonline - What are your future releases, and what are the labels you're currently working with?
Triptych - Coming now is the Beka compilation (Australian Dj from Turbo Trance) Accelerator 2.0 with one of my track Here I Am , also the Groove Zone
compilation with an electro-psy-trance track called 2 ears and 1
mouth , Then 2 more tracks will be released soon and one very
progressive
Next year i will release also a new album, a remixes album.
I'm glad that some very respectful artist wanted to remix my tracks
like ManMadeMan, Tranan, Protoculture, and others... So we came to the
idea with Turbo Trance to make this remixes album next year.
fullonline - You're an important member of "Turbo Trance Records". Can you give us infos, links, scheduled releases?
Triptych - The
legendary ManMadeMan just joined the team, and well release soon a
remix album of their best tunes, featuring artist like Hallucinogen,
System 7, Tristan, Eat static and many more
Then an album of new Israeli band called Elec3, and then the new Accelerator 3.0 I will compile.
fullonline - How do you define your music? From where you got the inspiration to make such groovy and still psychedelic sounds?
Triptych -
Funky-Trancy-electro-full-progressive-on ? ? I dont really know how to
define my music, it would be like to define myself, too difficult ;)
I take inspiration into all the music I listen.
fullonline - What do you think about people sharing music through mp3 instead of buying it?
Triptych - Sharing is nice, discovering new music is nice, but if it stop the process of buying cds for some people its very bad, and worst is to play it on stage ! We need a pro scene with real cds or audio, not mp3 !
fullonline - How do you make your Live Acts? What equipment do you use in your Live Acts?
Triptych - Im alone so its difficult to bring a lot of gear when you play in the middle of nowhere, and when you ask promotor to rent some gear, you have only one chance on 3 to have it, so I decided to make it more simple, but not less interactive ! I play a backup of the tracks main structure (sometimes for Live I use other edit of released tracks) and I add some synth I play live with some virtual synth running on Cubase SX2, I open a session with around 5 different synth, and with those synths I can be sure I will be able to play them cause they are in my laptop I bring and it doesnt depend of a non-serious promotor. But when you play for good organization and that you have also a Virus and a Nord Lead, its nice because I can play a lot of instruments. For me live is this, playing instrument ! maybe because I came from a rock band.
fullonline - You prefer to play a DJ set or a Live Act? Why?
Triptych - I like live of course, cause its your music, the crowd react to your music, its a real dialog with a public. Its also one of the main purpose in music to share it live with people. But I like also Djing because I like to play tracks from other artist a lot.
fullonline - In your DJ sets you usually play tracks from which other artists?
Triptych - Recently I used to play some groovy and funky music, with a lot of power in the rhythm like Sub 6, Pop Stream, Psycraft, Infectedi like also some more melodic stuff like Protoculture, Delirious, Oforia, and of course the production of Turbo Trance label, etc
fullonline - How long does it take for you to make a new track, from the ideas and inspirations to the dance floor? Any hint for a person who is starting making psytrance?
Triptych - Well it's difficult to say. First you have some ideas to collect samples, to work on synth preset, try some new reverb setting, etc.. and then with new tricks you find you can make one or two tracks, but maybe the tricks you found will be used in a track 2 month later, so it's difficult to say when exactly the work for a track really begin. Even for me when you're not in your studio you are working on a track, when for exemple you're in your car listening to cd's, to other music to get influences or new ideas.
But for building a structure let's say it can take like around 2 weeks,
sometimes less, and sometimes much more, it can take a month if you're
not happy at some point and if you decide to stop the track for a while
to get some more fresh ideas later.
Then you have a structure, you have your track, you test it on a dacefloor and see if it needs some last changes...
fullonline - What makes a good party? You think decoration is important?
Triptych - Everything is important, but most important is the people, with a good crowd you can make the best parties !
fullonline - What do you think people should do to make a better scene? Any visions about the future?
Triptych - The scene in many countries is getting bigger and bigger, and this is nice for Psy-trance, but its also bigger as you have every week a new label, and like 10 more cds ! I think personally its sometimes too much. Its good to discover new artist but the problem in psy-trance is that even if we have more and more cds and labels, the music is not always getting better and better, we should have more originality proportionally to all the new label existing. It seems that a lot of project wants to make the same music. There is like a standardization in Psy-trance actually.
fullonline - What is your favorite psychoactive molecule?
Triptych - Only Wine, Beer (Belgium ones) and Vodka, I tried other stuff in the past, but didnt like it ;)
fullonline - We all know that all kind of weird stuff happen at psychedelic gatherings. Can you tell us something different/funny that you saw or happened to you in a party?
Triptych - Recently I had to stop a Live because of a guy who just fall down unconscious on the dancefloor, this is a little bit scary to see how much people can get so twisted in their head with very hard drugs, psychedelism is nice, but not to extremity
fullonline - Any last comment, message and/or promotional link?
Triptych - I would like to thank everybody supporting me starting by you with this interview ;)
Cheers !
Charles / Triptych
fullonline - Thank you!
Respect!
