Andy Yakovlev has been producing electronic music for a long time, but
it was only a couple of years ago that he started releasing his tracks.
Now he has four different psy-related projects (ProSect, Sonify, Sound
Field and ICO) and is about to release the Sound Field debut, a peculiar
and well-crafted album. In this interview he shares with us his sincere
thoughts, starting with an emotive intro and going deeper into his
opinions about many music related subjects.
Enjoy!
Sound Field: Greetings to all of the readers!
My name is Andy Yakovlev, I'm 23, currently living in the southern part of Israel. It's been 6 years since I made my first track (it sounded lame even for gameboy game), right now I'm behind 4 creative musical projects and who knows what the future has in store...
First of all, as a prelude to the interview I want to mention that I'm currently on a short break from the music and the virtual world. No reason to blame anyone, it's the reality, for some people the scene evolves into a better shape for some not, if you can't stand the heat then move aside. It doesn't mean I'm out of here, I'm tired before I even got into it. I just had many disappointments in the latest period, or maybe I just need some more dedicated time & power for my life instead of using it for my useless renegading.
No doubt its short, and I feel my heart empty, my veins about to explode, my musical ideas about to scare any other thoughts of my brain... Yes, I can't live without music.
fullonline: Who is "Sound Field", where you are from and what is your musical background? Why do you choose this name to the project?
Sound Field: Me together with Liron Atia (Israel) formed this project at late 2003. We just started as one track collaboration which turned into a success, so we kept our blend alive. My background is my conceptual mind, my musical passion and my experimental spirit, Liron has more from the guitar playing, alternative rock band singing and reggae/dub addiction.
Unfortunately Liron had an accident while snowboarding and can't keep it up with the project. I'm sorry that I'm useless and God is not my telephone book, I had to finish the album on my own and I'm happy to see Liron smiling. I'm continuing to work solo as Sound Field and represent it for the crowd.
Sound Field name is a simple one, it has a global meaning - a big field full of various sonical dimensions, its our home and you always welcome in here.
fullonline: Are you married and/or have kids?
Sound Field: No. The time will come. But as for now I got a lovely girlfriend which I'm trying to teach about an intelligent electronic music.
fullonline: Can you keep a comfortable lifestyle working only as a psychedelic artist or a second job is needed?
Sound Field: No way. Music is life, life is bread, work for the bread. Badly, but I can't change the formula. By music I mean artistry as self expression, not fake industrial artistry.
fullonline: What is on your CD Player right now?
Sound Field: Ok, let's see what kind of stuff lying around my table now: Daft Punk "Homework", Telefon Tel Aviv "Map of What Is Effortless", Infusion "Six Feet Above Yesterday"; Oh, here is some PsyTrance: Vibrasphere "Archipelago".
fullonline: Which one of your own music do you like the most? Does it have a special meaning to you?
Sound Field: Sound Field. It has its own playground, if you gonna ask me what style is that, the answer is simple, it's colorful (years ago you not supposed to use this word, cause PsyTrance was colorful by nature) PsyTrance, no need in useless categorizing.
As for other project, ICO music got a special meaning for me, its freestyling, no boundaries. Still not much tracks made but its heaps of fun.
fullonline: What other music style do you listen to?
Sound Field: BigBeat, Acid Jazz, Lo-Fi, Ambient, Trip Hop, Progressive House and more... Brainwashing few names: Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Air, Thievery Corporation, Royksopp, Lamb, Amon Tobin, Dousk, Oliver Klein, etc.
fullonline: What Psytrance artists would you like to work with?
Sound Field: PsyTrance, I dream to work with some great artist out of the scene, but let me think... Some solid morning progressive music with Son Kite/Minilogue, Vibrasphere, Ticon or Atmos. Getting harder with X-Dream. Funked up with BigWigs? Or cinematic with Juno Reactor... Well that makes it veterans mostly. I'm sure there could be a clear-sighted result with many other talanted guys out there. Respect.
fullonline: What is your favorite production tool? Is there any equipment you think can help you produce better music?
Sound Field: PC is my favourite tool. Brain is the controller. Any equipment? Just expanding the knowledge, it's an endless way, I always learn. In the end it's not the equipment that makes it but you. By the way, in minimal setup, your brain works better, you can think of new things and ways to make this or that, try it.
fullonline: Do you prefer to play at parties at any specific time?
Sound Field: By
the sunset is a great time. Better to play in middle so you have the
reference of the place and the crowd that you going to be with. Don't
like when it's too much days in the Festivals, it makes you wait and
wait till you tired and drunk and haven't slept properly while booging
to another MegaRaver blaster! Besides I got no much of the hippie
attitude to drop myself in the bushes for few days.
fullonline: How do you choose the samples of your tracks? What is your favorite one?
Sound Field: Most of the time I got the title before the track, so I go and search for some related samples. Very picky with it anyway. Favorite one maybe the one that used in ProSect "Sonified", it makes the people on the dancefloor look funny, it says "It begins very simply, it begins with a house".
fullonline: You produce music under four main projects: Sound Field, ProSect, Sonify and ICO. What are the differences between each project and each project name means?
Sound Field: First, I've started with the ProSect project for the PsyTrance music. Sound Field basically the same but with addition of Liron, which currently involves only me. Sonify related more to the House part of the music with more freedom to the Funk influences. ICO is me and talanted Australian musician, Peter Mullins. Together we're up for making everything, freestyling is the key. For example, last track features a female vocalist and its a kind of a psychedelic trip hop song.
fullonline: You've been producing music since the last century, and releasing tracks under different projects for a little more than a couple of years, but only now you're releasing the first album "Sound Field - Audio Surfin'". Why it took this long to release and why you choose this name to the album?
Sound Field: Well, the album was in the pipe for a long, many things happened and now it's finally on its way. That also postponed other albums. But its ok, Album is not just a collection of random tracks, I fully dedicate myself to the vision and the concept of the album and work with it. Audio Surfin' is a debut, you can find a direct relation between the project name and the album, just look at it: Sound Field - Audio Surfin'. It's a very colorfull album, starts with more psychedelic influence (complexity) and slowly moves to more lighter progressive sound (simplicity), all we did just surfed around the Sound Field - touched the boundaries of Psychedelic Music, besides Liron is an ex-Surfer.
fullonline: Sound Field has released some tunes in the previous Oxygen Records compilations, and now you're releasing your album through Oxygen Records. Tell us about how your relationship with this label started and what do you think about them.
Sound Field: That was another label in the list I've tried. And voila! Tomas (DJ TV) liked something about the "Ocean In Motion" track, which was our debut release. The track was different from all of the other tracks on the cd, and I still feel that other tracks are black sheeps too (in a good or a bad way is up to the listener of course). Some magic been there, and now I found myself keeping that spells. Oxygen Records is where I feel comfortable, I can use my musical freedom.
fullonline: Your other project, Sonify, got excellent feedback in some releases. Could you please talk about that and explain your feelings about this?
Sound Field: As any musician I feel warm about positive feedback, it makes me keep on working and pleasing the crowd. And more or less I know the type of people who's up to my music.
fullonline: What are your future releases?
Sound Field:
Sound Field - Audio Surfin' (Oxygen Records)
VA - Destinations (Iono Music)
VA - Southern Oscillation (Ear Peaks Music Group)
VA - Mainspring Motion (Par-2 Prod.)
fullonline: Tell us about the psychedelic trance scene in Israel.
Sound Field: 90% commercial (incl. Full On and Psy Prog), 10% for the rest - some more or less underground and fun.
fullonline: Tell us about your time in the Israeli army.
Sound Field: It was crap, I felt crap. Now I'm free but I still feel crap...?
fullonline: What do you think makes a good remix? How would you describe a remix? Should we expect a remix from you in the future?
Sound Field: Remix, it's a new arrangement from the remixing artist's point of view, he takes the noticeable elements from the source track and makes a new story. If he writes a new interesting story - well done.
Yes, I'm up for remixing stage soon. Bring them on!
fullonline: What do you think about people sharing music through mp3 instead of buying it?
Sound Field: MP3 is here and it can't go. Face it. Instead of blaming it, try to find a way to be happy with it.
fullonline: You have a personal www.prosectorium.com , where we can find a lot of info on your projects and new music by you. Do you think it is a good promotion and way to test the new tracks? You got feedback on the site?
Sound Field: I'm not sure if many people go and visit it. I'm updating it time to time. As you said it has it all, so if you interested please come around.
fullonline: How do you prepare your Live Acts? What you usually change in each different Live Act?
Sound Field: Each set has its own flow and arrangement, different tracks, tempo, elements to control, surprises... Sometimes the set can start Psy (Sound Field) and slowly go to the progressive beats (Sonify). While on stage, I feel my music, I'm very active with the crowd.
fullonline: You prefer to play a DJ set or a Live Act? Why?
Sound Field: I don't do a DJ set. Maybe in the future, right now I feel more like a producer.
fullonline: In your DJ sets you usually play tracks from which other artists? What makes a good DJ?
Sound Field: Good DJ is the one who keeps me on the dance floor for all of his performance. You become tired not just because you weak, sometimes the same (even if it's started as a good line) or boring vibe makes you wanna leave.
fullonline: What makes a good party? You think decoration is important?
Sound Field: The
combination of music, people, location, friends and a good alcohol
(which makes you smile, find new friends and dance even if the music
factor is low
)
fullonline: What do you think people should do to make a better scene? Any visions about the future?
Sound Field: Stop talking, start acting. Got no more visions, I just see the scene goes down, I wonder what's in the future too. Can you tell me? Ok, I'm still a bit optimistic (I feel lonely among my artist friends). I will keep on making music without taking any side, that's my style, my direction, even if it's only for me and you. Maybe more people like me?
fullonline: In which other psytrance projects you think we should keep an eye?
Sound Field: Ah, I can recommend Voice Of Cod / OOOD, those got very good psy spirit that we all miss nowadays.
fullonline: How long does it take for you to make a new track, from the ideas and inspirations to the dance floor? Any hint for a person who is starting making psytrance?
Sound Field: It takes a week or two to make it, depends on a free hours. And more "empty" time just to find the inspiration.
Hint? Maybe a request, please before you start, think if you're going to produce to be "one of the millions" or "one from the millions". I'm a listener too, make me wanna listen to you.
fullonline: How each of you participates in the creation process of new music on the Sound Field project?
Sound Field: Usually someone was starting the track, sending to other, then it's the add-on/editing/removing/fixing part that works in a loop between both parts. Always I was the one who's finishing it.
fullonline: What is your favorite psychoactive molecule?
Sound Field: I'm Ukrainian born, I like alcohol!
fullonline: We all know that all kind of weird stuff happen at psychedelic gatherings. Can you tell us something different/funny that you saw or happened to you in a party?
Sound Field: A naked guy in my friend's car screaming "who's my parents?"
fullonline: Any last comment, message and/or promotional link?
Sound Field: Thanks for reading, hope you will enjoy the Sound Field album, and don't forget to visit my webpage.
Cheers!
fullonline: Thank you!
Respect!
