Setherian

Setherian is one of those few artists who want to make things different, walking his own way whatever it costs. He started to DJ a long time ago, and soon started to create his own music, releasing his first track in 2002. Being one of the most well know artist in Brazil and abroad, in 2004 he launched his own label and released his debut album through another label. Now, after exploring other musical realms, he is about to release his second album through Oxygen Records, and here he talks about the new pathways he's walking through.
Enjoy!

fullonline: Who is "Setherian", where are you from and what is your musical background? Why do you choose this name to the project?

Setherian = DJ Seth Setherian: My real name is Christian Borges Zahn, Im 27 born and living in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I have chosen at the beginning of my DJ career the pseudonym “Seth” , so people knows me as (DJ) Seth, Setherian is the name I chose for the music project I started 5 years ago. I have no academic background besides some piano classes I still have this days but I’m addicted to good music since a small kid so I guess that helps a lot.

fullonline: Are you married and/or have kids?

Setherian: Not married and yeah I would like to have kids one day. Not now. ;)

fullonline: Can you keep a comfortable lifestyle working only as a psychedelic artist or a second job is needed?

Setherian: Well, in my case in particular, a second job is not exactly needed, but welcome. I'm underground (still!). ;)

fullonline: You own a label called Aeon Records, but it had some problems. What happened? What was the best release from Aeon Records in your opinion, and what you learnt in this experience?

Setherian: Cosmophilia was our distributor, and they have not paid us for the last album, now they are bankrupt so... That situation was very stressful for me so I decided to hold Aeon “on the fridge” for a while. The best release I guess was VA- Refresh. But I’m very proud of VA-Arise too. Having a label is fun, but not being paid kills it.

fullonline: What is on your CD Player right now?

Setherian: Well, I must say psy trance doesn’t make for me anymore. Basically because I don’t think it is psychedelic anymore. What I listen right now is a mix of idm, minimal, electro, breakcore, dubstep and other sort of modern breakbeat, some black metal and some post rock also.

fullonline: Which one of your own music do you like the most? Does it have a special meaning to you?

Setherian: I’m very proud of my freestyle stuff which has not been released yet. I’m proud of those tracks that still sound fresh after a while u know. My new album is cool too. Odd.

fullonline: What other music style do you listen to?

Setherian: I’m listening a lot of Warp records stuff, guys like Autechre, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher .., some very good “minimal” artists like Akufen and Oliver Hacke makes my day as well. Also some Detroit techno has been on my mind quite frequently. New kids doing old school analog Detroit techno... Its fucking cool.

fullonline: What Psytrance artists would you like to work with?

Setherian - Postrancepose Setherian: I have enjoyed a lot my experiences with Tommi from Highpersonic Whomen/Haltya. He is great!

fullonline: Is there any equipment you think can help you produce better music?

Setherian: Reaktor is the real deal right now for me! Cycling 74 plugs also rox.

fullonline: Do you prefer to play at parties at any specific time?

Setherian: I’m currently playing minimal and electro in my DJ sets so, I like to play in the beginning or end of a party, I have no interest whatsoever to play a fast 145 DJ set anymore.

fullonline: How do you choose the samples of your tracks? What is your favorite one?

Setherian: It's not about one I would say.

fullonline: Ok, but what about spoken samples? You like to use them, you think they can add direction to a track?

Setherian: Well, I don't care much about that specific type of sample, but a voice that was not meant to be there, properly edited can be pretty cool. I like nowadays to desconstruct things more then just using them the way they are. Like cutting a few words, scramble them, pitch shifting and stuff...

fullonline: It's been more than 2 years since you released your debut album Setherian - Multiverse. What do you think about it now?

Setherian: Honestly, I don't listen to it anymore. I'm proud of it, I love the ideas in it, but I hate realizing how inferior my production skills were at the time. I try to look always into the future.

fullonline: You're about to release your second album "Setherian - Postrancepose" through Oxygen Records. Why you choose this name to the album? How would you describe the music inside it?

Setherian - Postrancepose Setherian: I’m not focused on psy trance anymore and I believe most of my new stuff shows that, so my new album features a few trance tracks together with others that shows new directions of my sound, so I like the idea to call it as a post trance manifest.

fullonline: The album "Setherian - Postrancepose" seems to be different from most releases today, for example the bpm range from 120 to 145. What were your influences to produce such diverse music?

Setherian: Idm and minimal mostly. But not all tracks have such influences. The newer ones mostly.

fullonline: You have tracks on all Oxygen Records compilations, and now they're about to release your second album. What do you think about Oxygen Records, and how is it to work with them?

Setherian: Oxygen is great, TV and Nem are very honest and they support me enormously. They do their thing from the heart and that rules.

fullonline: You also released a lot of tracks on different labels since 2002. What is your relationship with all other labels in which you released tracks? How do you choose the label you want to submit your track?

Setherian: Well, usually I tend up being friend of the label owners and that gives u comfort. I prefer like that actually, as a family. I’m not really sending much demos at the moment. So mostly it’s about people asking me for a track or something.

fullonline: You have released tracks in collaboration with other Brazilian artists like 2Hi and Oxyd, as well as with foreign producers, like Atomic Pulse and Hypersonic Whomen. How is it to work with other artists? What changes in the creative process?

Setherian: IIts cool, I like that, 2 brains think more then 1dont they? But there is a few important rules both artists must respect, and that is to accept ideas from others that might not be so much your thing, must understand its about being 50/50, u must let the other guy do his thing, don’t mess up... 3 guys working a bassline is stupid u know.

fullonline: What are your future releases, and what are the labels you're currently working with?

Setherian: I will release a new Ibex track for Demon Tea rec. soon , I believe I still gonna release some trance for Oxygen , and of course there is the album coming out .. I will release a few electroish trax soon also for labels like Offbeat from Sao Paulo. I have a new project called Lunaire, an I’m very thrilled about it. We will see, I want to release next year one idm based album to.

fullonline: What's your opinion about the psyscene in Brazil?

Setherian: I don’t like it anymore. Its way to pop for me. ;)

fullonline: What do you think makes a good remix? How would you describe a remix? Should we expect a remix from you in the future?

Setherian Setherian: I haven’t remixed many people, but I like the idea. To scramble other people’s material. I might do a remix for Sound Field in the future... lets see.

fullonline: What do you think about people sharing music through mp3 instead of buying it?

Setherian: I have no idea what will come out of all this. Its scary, but is reality, we must face it and adapt to it. But I think musicians should always be retributed for their work properly.

fullonline: How do you prepare your Live Acts? What you usually change in each different Live Act?

Setherian: I try to play the new stuff more then old I must confess, and of course my new album takes a lot of space in the live pa now. Currently, I’m using Ableton Live and one controller (keyboard) , I like to mix and reedit my tunes in it and play a few notes out of a soft synth.

fullonline: You prefer to play a DJ set or a Live Act? Why?

Setherian: Depends. Sometimes a DJ set can be killer, sometimes its not though... depends so much. I have done amazing DJ sets and Live PA’s as well. If I have to choose one, I guess I prefer a DJ set, because I’m too critic with my music. I don’t like it very much... ;)

fullonline: In your DJ sets you usually play tracks from which other artists? What makes a good DJ?

Setherian: Well, I’m not playing what I used to play 1, 2 years ago. I used to like playing The prog/techy stuff, but I have played fullon as well.. I used to love stuff like X-dream, Cosma, Midi Miliz, Human Blue, old S-Range … nowadays I play Jimmy Edgar, Akufen, Oliver Hacke, 2 Dollar Egg, etc.. About what is a good DJ for me, I think he must be an artist in what he does... I think he must care more about his taste then so much about what the crowd usually like, u cannot compromise or avoid your artistic feelings, but u have a certain duty to make people dance. So, 50/50 for a pop event is cool.

fullonline: What makes a good party? You think decoration is important?

Setherian: I don’t like the fluor glowing psy decoration at all, I prefer a cleaner one. A good sound system is absolutely essential of course and its always nice when u can see nice people and have a good location.

fullonline: What do you think people should do to make a better scene? Any visions about the future?

Setherian: I think psy trance cannot become serious as it used to be anymore. Most people today doesn’t have an idea how it was 6-10 years ago and the old school has almost vanished. I have no idea how this all will end up like. I want to find a new scene with the same spirit and social vibe I used to feel in trance parties back in the days.

fullonline: In which other psytrance projects you think we should keep an eye?

Setherian: I don’t know... But I listened new stuff from Vibra and 2Hi and it sounded very nice.

fullonline: How long does it take for you to make a new track, from the ideas and inspirations to the dance floor? Any hint for a person who is starting making psytrance?

Setherian: Well, I have done tracks in a weekend and I have tracks that I started 1 year ago and I still didn’t finish it, so... Depends, but the one you finish fast tend to be better. When u take to much time, u might loose the real vibe u felt in the first day u know.

fullonline: What is your favorite psychoactive molecule?

Setherian: I have no problems with drugs whatsoever, I like them. I like acid, I like weed, I like … But I’m responsible, I know how to control myself, so I have had only good experiences in this life.

fullonline: We all know that all kind of weird stuff happen at psychedelic gatherings. Can you tell us something different/funny that you saw or happened to you in a party?

Setherian: Long time I don’t go to a nice trance party, I used to like the festivals at the beach. The chicks naked on the beach were cool! ;)

fullonline: Any last comment, message and/or promotional link?

Setherian: Well, I say that a lot... be original, be yourself, don’t be afraid. The path might be longer and harder, but I truly believe it will be a greater one!

fullonline: Thank you!
Respect!
