Mechanix

Mechanix was the first artist I interviewed here, back in that time the fullonline.net site was starting, but Eldad was already well known in the scene, with an album and many more released tracks backing him up. Almost two years have passed and I'm pleased to see that his music evolved in its own way, maintaining the dark atmosphere with some techno influences, but now more mature on the musical side, with better production and even some discrete melodies. Now that he is releasing his second album, after a compilation and many more tracks, I think it's the perfect time to publish this more complete interview, presenting more of his work and opinions.
Enjoy!

fullonline: Hi Eldad, it's been a long time since our last interview. How do you see the changes in your music in this period?

Mechanix Live Act Mechanix: Hey there. ;)
Yes, it's been a long time and I'm honored to do it again! Well, all the time changes happen in the music creation, in the sound production and new influences... I think that the new stuff got a better sound quality, a better one then my debut album for example. About the music style also I think it got more "trance" in it like if in my first album I was into "hard" sound all the way so in One Man Game I tried to do other things... Also hard feel, but I mixed it with more leads and melodies, but kept it in my style... In Illegal Dance (my debut album) I didn't know what I wanted, I was just playing around... In One Man Game I knew what I want from myself and I did it.

fullonline: What other music style do you listen to?

Mechanix: hmm, I listen to all... most of the time I making music at the studio so when I have the chance to listen to other music its on the radio... I like old music and more "quiet' songs... I like Depeche Mode and I like the voice of the singer from Evanescence and few Linkin Park and Israeli music of course.

fullonline: Your second album Mechanix - One Man Game was just released by Yage Records, and I must say I really enjoy it. What were your inspirations while producing the album, and what tracks you like the most?

Mechanix: Like you know it took me some time to make this album, because I didn't want to release an album that I'm not fully satisfied with... With this one I'm glad about the results, but always have place to improve things and that what beautiful in music creation: You never stop learning! The inspiration always comes from my day life and from my heart! In this album I tried to do things I didn't before like to record vocal samples and not just cut from some movie or something, like in tracks 3,5,7,8,10 the vocal samples there is from me, my friends, my family... So it was more fun to make it more interesting you feel you're doing something and its fun, after all it's all about fun and you need to enjoy what you're doing. I like all the tracks on the album, because every track has its own story. I like to play Monoblock, Neutronyx, Candy can do it, A true Story and Trance4nation.
Track 5 "Tears of Anger" is a track that really came from my heart, cause I made it for my old friend Zolod r.i.p. after he died! But I can't play it cause it makes me kind of sad, I played it 2 times in Ireland and Cyprus and even that track worked well its made me feel sad inside so I decided not to play it again.

fullonline: Yage Records also released a compilation compiled by you, the VA - Pump Fiction, which features two tracks from you. How is the work of compiling tracks for an album?

Mechanix: Yes, in February 2006 I compiled for Yage records a cd called Pump Fiction.
It was a challenge for me because after 13 years in the trance scene I'm very selective in music, but felt I want to do it to see "if I can find something that I like". Like you all know I found some strong stuff there and created for it to tracks of my own... to make a compilation is not so easy cause you need to find the tracks with the style you're looking for and that the budget will fit to all the tracks, so I started to look for the tracks and when I found something I liked I started the negotiations about the fees well have tracks there from Xerox & illumination, Damage, Neuromotor and more well knows projects. It was not easy, but thanks to Mike from Yage Records that gave me all the support and in the end it worked well!

fullonline: Yage Records released your compilation and your second album, and also their first release has one of your tracks. What do you think about Yage Records and what is your relationship with the label?

Mechanix - One Man Game Mechanix: yes, Yage Records based in Gothenburg, Sweden and running by dj Brote (mike) that in my opinion is the best dj there, and if to speak on mixing skills not only there!
My connection with Yage Records dates from their first compilation "Electric Embryo" in which I released there my track "Life Lines", but already in this compilation I helped them with few tracks from other artists... Our connection came naturally we are like family, we in good connection and we do all what we can to support each other! Yage Records is not old label and they have more things to learn and I'm trying all the time to give my long experience in the scene to them... sometimes it works and some not, but if you have good meaning to do something and you're working hard you'll will get to your goal like in every thing! So Yage Records is like my second home and all the people there are like my brothers!

fullonline: You also released tracks with many other labels, what labels that you work with you think are responsible and professional?

Mechanix: all the labels I'm working with are ok cause I never working with someone that I get the impression that's not serious!
One thing that bothers me all the time is the time it takes to the cd to be released, but its ok it's like this every where...

fullonline: What are your future releases? Any new tracks released in the near future? And long term plans?

Mechanix: I just released the new album and a track on VA - Spiritually Spaced Out by Shiva Space Technology and a track on VA - Psychic Chakra by Geomagnetic. In the near future you wont find a lot of my tracks on compilations maybe 2 or 3 cause I'm planning one more album for 2007, so lets see if its will work out but I have the feeling that its will!

fullonline: Tell us about the psychedelic trance scene in Israel and about your experiences playing in other countries.

Mechanix: hmm I must say I playing more outside Israel than inside. ;)
I'm 27 years old and I started play here when I was 16 years old the Israeli parties are great, but cause some personal issues I didn't play a lot lately in my own country, but I'm promise to present One Man Game in a few partys again, cause after all the Israeli crowd is one of the warmest crowds all over!
I'm playing a lot around the world and it's nice to see new place and cultures every place have its own special thing and I love it!

fullonline: What do you think makes a good remix? How would you describe a remix? Should we expect a remix from you in the future?

Mechanix: There are few ways to make a good rmx, like to tell the same story with your sounds or same sounds with another story or mix between! I personally I like to change both, but leave a "taste" from the old version and it's important that it stands in the same level or higher than the original track.
Since you asked about remixes, I will say that my 3rd album that's planned for 2007 also will be a rmx/collaboration album with rmxs to tracks I liked to play at the last time and few collaborations with my good friends.

fullonline: What do you think about people sharing music through mp3 instead of buying it?

Mechanix: I don't like this thing at all, not only because they're sharing, the main problem with it is that mp3 is not good sound quality!!!!!!!!!!!!! We the artists trying and working hard to make fat and clear sounds, and than people do the download and listen to it in ugly quality of sound, so I don't agree with it!
I know few people that download mp3 to listen the album for example and if they like it they buying the cd that they will can listen and play and good quality this is ok for me! But the others are just killing the scene!

fullonline: You have a personal website www.mechanix.co.il, where we can find a lot of info about you. There is any plan to update or upgrade?

VA - Pump Fiction -=- Compiled by Mechanix Mechanix: Yes this is my website, but I didn't update it long time cause I had problems with the web master and can't find someone that will update it for me and redesign it.
I hope I will find someone serious to do it, because its important so I will try my best to update it soon. Until then you can look on my Myspace. It's more updated than the website and I will update it every time I have free time!

fullonline: How do you prepare your Live Acts? What you usually change in each different Live Act?

Mechanix: In my live I'm using the lap top and Ableton Live, there I'm creating the mix for it, I'm using also a midi board of M-Audio and Nord Lead and a console cause most of my work its inside of the pc, so I'm trying to do most of the live like throwing sound fx, pads, and effects from it and from the synths to add more sounds.
I play all the time a mix between released stuff and unreleased tracks, so if now that One Man Game is out I playing from it the tracks I like the most and adding new tracks to check how they work on the dance floor.

fullonline: You prefer to play a DJ set or a Live Act? Why?

Mechanix: Today I prefer to do Live sets because I'm working hard at the studio to play my music and I prefer to come to a party and work there on the sounds to add more sounds to play with the versions real time its more interesting for me today, but if someone want Live+DJ I can also do it with no problem.

fullonline: In your DJ sets you usually play tracks from which other artists? What makes a good DJ?

Mechanix: I like to play tracks from my closest friends if I have some tracks that I like, but if it's only a DJ set so most of my set will run on my music. I don't have 1 artist that love all his music, but I like to listen to Hujaboy, Xerox & Illumination, Zion, E-Jekt, Ananda Shake and more...
I think a DJ need to work on the dance floor, not just to play the tracks one by one, he needs to read the crowd (really important) and to have a good technique and to tell a good story in his set not just "boom boom".

fullonline: What makes a good party? You think decoration is important?

Mechanix: Whats makes a good party? Everything!!! Good decoration, good sound system, location, good people, all these things make the party with a better chance to be killer, and the music that its one of the most important things, but not just good music (DJs/Live Acts). The promoters in my opinion must make good line ups like there was few years ago... Today you come to most of the parties and it's just the same style of music that running from start. I think each style have time and place at the party. What's better to open party then minimal/progressive?!!! Last party I played the first DJ opened his set with tracks from Astrix and such... Its not that I hate Astrix or this music style, no!!! I just feel it's not the right time for it... The DJ need to warm the party not to burn it from start... In the past it was minimal/progressive at the start, then going to darker sound and in the end the full on sound was coming...Today its only full on or only dark or only prog... But that's my opinion of course.

fullonline: What do you think people should do to make a better scene? Any visions about the future?

Mechanix: First people need to start buy CDs, because if not the artists will can't do what they like and the scene will go down and less professional. I think people already understood that and who can buy more CDs and support the scene.
The scene will stay like it is now I think more people come, other people will leave, generations changing, in some places the scene is a bit less colorful than it was, but as long the good vibe is still in there there's no problem. About the music I bet always will be the people that will try to make new styles/ideas in our music and I'm sure that will be people that will support them also!! About me, I will just do always what I like and feel I need to do...

fullonline: How long does it take for you to make a new track, from the ideas and inspirations to the dance floor? Any hint for a person who is starting making psytrance?

Mechanix: I don't have exact time to make a track I can make a great one in 3 days and its can take 1 month or even more, it's all about how you feel inside, if you feel inspired you can make a "monster" in 2 days.
The most important thing is not to finish the track because you want to start another one, finish the track when you think its 100% ready and do what you like only keep faith in yourself and this is for every artist on earth younger and old ones!

fullonline: We all know that all kind of weird stuff happen at psychedelic gatherings. Can you tell us something different/funny that you saw or happened to you in a party?

Mechanix: Ah this stuff happening almost every party, he, he, he... ;)
The most funny I remember that in Moscow, Russia, few years back some guy "drink to much coffee" so he took his pans down and scream something in Russian and tried to push a stick to his ass ;)

fullonline: Any last comment, message and/or promotional link?

Mechanix: Just lets keep the good vibe and see you soon out there.
Thanks to you on this interview Napo, I liked it a lot!
Stay safe you all!
love&light; ;)
Eldad.
