Hujaboy is producing psytrance for a long time and releasing his tracks
on diverse labels. He just released his third album, which is highly
recommended, and also release another robust album last year, in
partnership with Uri Azene, the E-Jekt album. He was one of the most
claimed acts to play this year at Brazil, and is releasing tracks on his
own style. In this interview he talks a bit about himself, his work,
and many many more.
Enjoy!
fullonline: Who is "Hujaboy", where you are from and what is your musical background?
Hujaboy: My name is Nir Shoshani I'm 30 years old originally from Jerusalem and now living in Tel Aviv, Israel.
My musical background before trance I was a singer in death metal band, and I was into music since I remember myself.
I began producing and DJing trance in 96 and formed Gorlation Corporation with Assaf Dor.
We split up in 2000 and I started working as Hujaboy, and in the last 3 years also as E-jekt with Uri Azene.
fullonline: Are you married and/or have kids?
Hujaboy: I'm not married and single at the moment, but yes, in the future I would like to have kids.
I love kids, I'm a boy myself.
fullonline: Can you keep a comfortable lifestyle working only as a psychedelic artist or a second job is needed?
Hujaboy: Well, in the last 2 years I can live from my profession doing only that, but it wasn't like that all the time I had many rough years in the beginning as a struggling young artist and today I eat the fruits of believing in my music and hard work all those years.
fullonline: What is on your CD Player right now?
Hujaboy: I listen to minimal techno artists like Trente Moller its very psychedelic music, but slow and deep.
And to rock as well, stuff like Alice in Chains and many more...
fullonline: How do you see the differences between your two projects Hujaboy and E-Jekt? How are the creation process differences when working with Uri Azene in your project E-Jekt compared when you work alone as Hujaboy?
Hujaboy: It's
a very different energy when I work alone its like I'm part of the
computer and my thoughts are different. And when I work with Uri its
more putting effort on details and power of tracks, it's hard to
explain.
Both projects are about strong Psychedelic music that is focusing on
taking the listener to a journey in sound with a beginning a middle and
an end.
fullonline: What Psytrance Artists would you like to work with?
Hujaboy: I have worked with very talented artists like Domestic and Sub 6, and in the future I'd like to work with Simon Posford.
fullonline: Is there any equipment you think can help you produce better music?
Hujaboy: Yes, its endless this equipment story... I want more synths, I want better monitors, better cables, better acoustics, and it never ends.
fullonline: Do you prefer to play at parties at any specific time?
Hujaboy: Best
time for my music is sunrise the time when it's still dark and the sun
is starting to come up and first hours of light. Even though in some
festivals, like in Brazil, the best time is sunset.
fullonline: How do you choose the samples of your tracks? What is your favorite one?
Hujaboy: Until lately I was sampling from movies or audio book, but now I record my own samples. I use to choose the weirdest samples or meaningful (at least to me) ones.
fullonline: Your tracks are between the most attractive in different compilations on labels like Crystal Matrix, Spun, Hom-Mega and Tip World. How do you choose the label you want to submit your track?
Hujaboy: No, it's not like that. Usually the label asks me for a track it's never something specific because I when I sit down to work I don't know what will come out exactly.
fullonline: Talk about the E-Jekt album "Dark Fader". Why you chosen this name? What people should expect to find inside it? What's your favorite track?
Hujaboy: Well I'll start with the names we like to laugh a lot and we felt this whole star wars was a nice target to laugh on (and with).
The album I did with Uri Azene and its 100% Psychedelic dance floor material.
I love most tracks on this album a lot so I can't really say what's my fav.
fullonline: Your new album Hujaboy - Party Animals is one of the most expected releases of 2006. The cover is really different, do you think the music is different as well? What should we expect from this release?
Hujaboy: I
think this album so far is the peak of what I did so far I really love
every track and finally I reached a level of production I think is good.
The tracks are different one from the other, and you can find dance floor material and home listening stuff as well.
The cover was made by The Reptile House from London, from an idea Raja
Ram had, its kinda 70 pink style and it really reflects me and my music
in a way funny crazy weird.
fullonline: Besides the new Hujaboy album, what are your future releases?
Hujaboy:
There is Party Animals 12" single that features 2 tracks from the album, a remix also on 12" that I did to 1200 Mics - Computers
that is a taster from the 1200 Mics upcoming remix album. A track
called Voyages into the supernatural from the upcoming TIP comp.
I did a cover version to Dead or Alive - U spin me around for Sony Music
that will release in the end of april.
And an Electro house track under the name Jab and Zidan that was released on Slow and Low records.
fullonline: In your opinion, what makes a good remix? How would you describe a remix?
Hujaboy: Every remix is a different angle and it depends on the remixer.
Some remix a track by using all the sounds from the original, some make a new track but use some of the same notes and lines.
I like to build a new track, but use some of the main themes so the listener will not always be sure if it's a remix or not.
fullonline: What do you think about people sharing music through mp3 instead of buying it?
Hujaboy: mp3 is a big revolution in the industry, but the industry is changing.
I think in a way its good because more people get to know your music in a more easy way.
And now the same people can buy the music in mp3.
But, it's a two way thing.
First of all people doesn't realize that mp3 is a bad format to listen
to music and it makes people settle for bad quality most of the time
(unless its 320 kpbs via good encoder)
Second people don't understand that through sharing they are stealing if
they aren't buying music.
fullonline: How do you make your Live Acts? What equipment do you use in your Live Acts?
Hujaboy: I use my laptop for Live, 2 synths, a mixer and effects.
In the laptop I use Ableton live program and Echo Indigo sound card.
The music I play is mostly the latest tracks and one or two of previous "hits" and special remixes.
fullonline: You prefer to play a DJ set or a Live Act? Why?
Hujaboy: I like playing both. Live is great fun because the crowd is more "pumped up" and excited. And DJ sets I love because I can get to play other artists music that I love and also take the crowed to a sort of journey.
fullonline: In your DJ sets you usually play tracks from which other artists?
Hujaboy: My favorite artists at the moment for DJ sets are: Contra, Black and white, PTX, Xerox Illumination, and Zion.
fullonline: Considering the increasing number of new artists and Live Acts on parties and Festivals, what do you think will happen to the DJ profession? In your opinion, what is the role of the DJ in the psyscene today?
Hujaboy: In my opinion the DJ has a very important roll in a party.
Because usually Live Acts are too short to build a good story.
Now the DJ role is evolving to a kind of Live Act as well more ad more
dj's are using the Abelton Live which focus more and making the DJ sets
more alive by using lots of effects and new ways of editing.
There were always bad DJs and there always will be there's nothing we can do against that.
fullonline: Any last comment, message and/or promotional link?
Hujaboy:
Keep it psy!
fullonline: Thank you!
Respect!
